Injured Explorer Rescued From 580-Foot-Deep Cave

LAFAYETTE, Ga. —
A cave explorer who broke his leg while exploring the deepest cave in the Eastern United States was rescued Monday after spending the night 580 feet under Pigeon Mountain. Bill Putnam, 27, a researcher at Georgia Tech’s School of Information and Computer Science in Atlanta, was listed in stable condition at Hutcheson Medical Center in Ft. Oglethorpe, a spokesman said.
