2 Partners to Quit Research Group

Allied-Signal Inc. and Unisys Corp. have decided to withdraw from the Microelectronics & Computer Technology Corp. by the end of 1987, officials of the high-technology research consortium say.

MCC spokesman Bill Stotesbery said the companies’ withdrawal would have no effect on the group’s 1987 research budget of $75 million. Companies in the group pool their research efforts in areas such as computer-aided design, semiconductors and computer software.

Unisys--created through last year’s merger of Burroughs Corp. and Sperry Corp.--notified MCC officials shortly before the end of 1986 that the company was withdrawing, Unisys spokesman J. Peter Hynes said Tuesday.

Hynes said he could not give a specific reason for the withdrawal. Sperry was a founding member of MCC, but Burroughs did not belong. “When we merged, obviously they looked at the needs of the merged company and came down with the decision they did,” Hynes said.

Allied-Signal is withdrawing because it is selling its Amphenol Products division, which participates in MCC’s semiconductor packaging and interconnect program, said spokesman Mike Ascolese. Gould Inc. officially withdrew from MCC at the end of 1986 but has not yet found a buyer for its share.

Bobby Inman, MCC’s first director, left at the end of December for another job.
