The United States is not planning to step up U.S. military aid to Chad despite the flare-up of fighting there involving Libyan forces, State Department spokesman Charles Redman said in Washington. U.S. intelligence has confirmed that Libya suffered a serious military defeat at the town of Fada, including “substantial loss of tanks, aircraft and assorted other equipment,” and troop losses also were heavy, Redman said. He said Washington was unable to give specific figures. Redman added that $15 million in emergency U.S. military aid announced in December has either arrived in Chad or is en route.
