An Iranian gunboat fired a missile into a Hong Kong-operated oil tanker early Thursday, but the device failed to explode, Persian Gulf shipping officials said.

The missile was fired as the 41,893-ton Panamian-flag tanker World Dawn sailed toward the Strait of Hormuz en route to Italy with a shipment of Kuwaiti crude oil, the sources said.

No casualties were reported, they said.

The sources said the missile pierced a ballast tank on the port side of the vessel, then penetrated a steel bulkhead and lodged in a central cargo tank. Iran has made frequent attacks on shipping of gulf nations who support Iraq in its war with Iran.
