American Indians will have to run their own schools because “Indian students in our schools are not making the grade,” the government announced. Ross Swimmer, head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, also unveiled initiatives aimed at cutting unemployment and alcoholism on reservations, including one that would require recipients of general relief checks to work on community projects or enroll in job training. A total of 181 bureau schools instruct 38,300 Indians, about 10% of Indian students. Most of the rest are in state public school systems.
