Salvadoran Vice President Rodolfo Castillo Claramount accused the nation’s extreme right of trying to form a paramilitary group to overthrow President Jose Napoleon Duarte, and he suggested that former presidential candidate Roberto D’Aubuisson may be behind the plot. Castillo called a news conference to warn of “a paramilitary force of fascist tendencies, which goes against the democratic system.” He added that “we will fight against the people who want to return to past schemes.” Gen. Adolfo Blandon, chairman of the country’s joint chiefs of staff, stressed the military’s loyalty to Duarte.
