Approximately 5.8 million Mexicans are expected to pawn goods this year at the national pawnshop, the government newspaper El Nacional reported Thursday.

Luis Carbajo, spokesman for the Monte de Piedad, as the pawnshop is called, said more people are turning to it each year. The Monte de Piedad is headquartered in Mexico City’s main plaza and has branches around the country.

Carbajo said the pawnshop does its heaviest business in August, just before the start of the school year.
