France has declared Australia’s consul general in New Caledonia, John Dauth, persona non grata and given him one month to leave the French South Pacific territory. Dauth, 39, said France gave no reason for the expulsion. But he said French Minister for Overseas Territories Bernard Pons recently accused him in a radio interview of “interference in the internal affairs of France.” Last Monday, France suspended ministerial contacts between Paris and Canberra to protest Australia’s role in having New Caledonia declared non-self-governing and added to the United Nations’ decolonization list.
