A couple from Kentucky’s Union County shared national honors with two other couples Sunday when they were named the recipients of the Young Farmers and Ranchers of America awards by the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Richard and Janet White, who farm nearly 3,000 acres near Clay, Ky., were one of three top winners announced at the opening of the federation’s 68th annual convention at the Anaheim Marriott and Hilton hotels.

The other winning couples were Frederick and Laura Stone, dairy farmers in Biddeford, Me., and Timothy and Tori Dwyer, cattle ranchers from Squaw Gap, N.D.

All three families are considered top finishers in the contest with no attempt to rank them in order of finish. They were selected from 36 applicants from around the country who were state contest winners.

Judging for the contest is based primarily on a farmers’ operational efficiency, return on investment, increased net worth and personal leadership traits.

Winners of the Kentucky Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farm Family contest last month, the Whites add the national honors to their state prizes, which included a year’s free use of a Toyota pickup truck. As national winners, the Whites will get the rent-free use of a Deutz-Allis tractor for a year.
