A rejuvenated storm blamed for 26 deaths in the Midwest last week buried parts of the Northeast under nearly two feet of wind-whipped snow Sunday.

Heavy snow warnings remained in effect for northern New Hampshire, most of Maine, Vermont and eastern New York. Snow mixed with rain glazed central and southern New England, and gale warnings were in effect for the northern New England coast after winds gusted to 45 m.p.h. at Newark, N. J.

The storm dumped two feet of snow over the Vermont mountains and was expected to drop that much over the mountains of Maine.

Heavy Snow in Maine

Sunday’s snowfall included 21 inches at Houlton, Me., 20 at Warren, Vt., 19 at Wilton, N.Y., 18 at Cabot, Vt., and 17 at Forestfield, Vt.

In eastern New York, Wilton got 19 inches of snow and Stillwater got 15 inches.

Crews worked to restore power Sunday afternoon to 200 to 300 homes in the Albany, N. Y., area where wet, heavy snow sent tree limbs crashing down on power lines, a Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. spokesman said. Another 300 homes scattered throughout Saratoga and Washington counties were also without power, he said.

State police throughout the region advised residents to stay indoors, saying most of the roads were icy and packed with snow.

Car Crash Is Fatal

While most accidents were minor, at least one person was killed in the storm. George Manos of Standish, Me., died Saturday when his car collided with another vehicle, police said.
