Libyan forces fired on French and Chadian troops at a military supply base in Chad, the French Defense Ministry in Paris reported. No damage or injuries resulted, sources said. The base, near Kulait, is south of the 16th parallel, which France has warned the Libyans not to cross. Libya denied the French report but said Chadian rebels that it supports were in the area. In another incident, the garrison of Zouar in northern Chad, captured Jan. 3 by Chadian forces, came under heavy fire in a Libyan air-and-ground attack, the Chadian army said. The Libyans suffered heavy casualties before being routed, the army added; it did not refer to any Chadian casualties.
