Missile Triggers Baghdad Blast

BAGHDAD, Iraq —
An Iranian long-range missile struck the Iraqi capital of Baghdad today, setting off a huge explosion in the inner city. Iran said its ground forces advanced six miles, which would put them 12 miles from Basra.
Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency said Iranian forces now occupy 38 square miles of Iraqi soil. Basra, a southern port that is Iraq’s second biggest city and is home to 1 million people, has been an Iranian objective since the war began in September, 1980.
