‘Gorbachev and Sakharov’

Share

Dimitri K. Simes’ article (Editorial Pages, Dec. 29), “Gorbachev and Sakharov: Little Has Changed Yet?” was right on the mark.

Before our self-identified peace activists cheer on Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev for Andrei Sakharov’s release, they should, as Simes points out, ask themselves what, if any, real progress is being made to secure the release of the many other dissidents now held captive in Soviet prisons.

It is time that peace activists acknowledge that under Gorbachev, Soviet soldiers kill innocent boys and girls in Afghanistan. Why no cries of protest from the activists over this abomination?

I can only conclude the so-called peace activists are quite selective about what they consider to be morally appalling. This to me is sickening. Under rightist regimes, repression is cause for protest; but, under leftist regimes, it is merely cause for a little embarrassment. What hypocrites, these peace activists!
