Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir suggested that his refusal to trade Israeli-occupied land for peace will not be his last word if there should be direct negotiations with Arab states. “Nobody will expect me to say now what will be my position when we meet. We have different positions, it is true. But the first condition for getting a possibility to bridge the gap between us is to meet and talk face to face.” Shamir, leader of the right-wing Likud Bloc, added: “You can imagine many acceptable and agreed solutions by all the partners in our area.”
