A senior Pentagon official involved with U.S. support for Nicaraguan rebels said Thursday he is retiring at the end of the month for “personal reasons,” not because of fallout from the Iran- contra affair.

Nestor D. Sanchez, 59, who represented the Defense Department at many interagency meetings on contra aid, said the Pentagon monitored clandestine arms shipments to the rebels. But he denied having any knowledge of U.S. government connections to the flights, or control over them.
