Border Vigilante Suspect Faces Trial
A man who helped round up and detain 13 aliens during a patrol of the Mexican border last summer pleaded not guilty Thursday to federal charges of illegally carrying firearms.
U.S. Magistrate Nancy Fiora set a March 4 trial date for J. R. Hagan, who was named last month in two counts of an indictment accusing him of illegal firearms possession.
Last July, Hagan and other members of Civilian Materiel Assistance, a conservative group, staged a patrol near Lochiel, about 50 miles southeast of Tucson. The group rounded up and detained 13 aliens, allegedly at gunpoint. The aliens were turned over to federal officials.
