Local News in Brief : 2 CSUN Students in Canada for TV Debate
Two California State University, Northridge students flew to Montreal Friday to participate in an internationally televised debate.
Ian Fielding of Reseda and Mark Crossman of Northridge will argue against establishing a free-trade agreement between the United States and Canada, said William Eadie, chairman of CSUN’s speech communications department. Eadie said Fielding and Crossman are both graduate communications students.
Representatives from 13 American and 10 Canadian universities were invited to participate in the forum, scheduled to take place this weekend in the Montreal City Council chambers.
The debate series called “Dialogue,” will be televised on the Public Broadcasting System and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., a CSUN spokeswoman said. Other American universities at the event include William and Mary, United States Military Academy, Vanderbilt and Notre Dame.
Other topics of debate include the dangers of nationalism, whether the United Nations is obsolete, drug testing in the United States and whether the credibility of the United States has been severely damaged because of the Iran- contra affair.
