Ten Latin American diplomats met privately in Panama City in an effort to renew the Contadora Group’s Central American peace initiative. Lending new support to the effort by attending the weekend conference of eight foreign ministers were U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar, of Peru, and Joao Baena Soares, of Brazil, the leader of the Organization of American States, On Monday, the 10 diplomats are scheduled to visit Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala, and then El Salvador and Honduras. The four-member Contadora Group has been trying for four years to mediate a peaceful solution to Central America’s conflicts. The group is made up of Colombia, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela.
