Question: Over the years, my brick wall has become very dirty and faded. What would you suggest as a method of cleaning it?

Answer: You might try using a solution of mild soap and water. If this does not work, I suggest that you use a solution of muriatic acid. You must be very careful in applying muriatic acid because it is highly toxic, and you must protect your eyes and skin with great care.

The Brick Institute of America has a pamphlet, “Cleaning Brick Masonry.” You can get this pamphlet for 75 cents by writing the institute at 11490 Commerce Park Drive, Reston, Va. 22091.

Q: Are there any remodeling quality standards for the construction industry and, if so, where are they available?

A: The Remodelers Council of the National Assn. of Home Builders has just released a set of comprehensive quality standards for remodeling.

The book, titled, “Quality Standards for the Professional Remodeling Industry,” presents the standards in easy reference format. These standards are as useful for the consumer as they are for the remodeler.
