Manila ‘Red Alert’ on Coup Laid to Rumors

MANILA —
The “red alert” in Manila faded to a “white alert” today, and a spokesman for President Corazon Aquino said weekend rumors of an attempted coup had little basis.
“Nobody was really worried,” said spokesman Teodoro Benigno. “Much of the happening is acoustical.” He quoted Aquino as saying, “The mere fact that I was not even wakened up means there was really nothing to call my attention to.”
