Finland’s Juna Kankkunen, driving a Lancia, took over the lead in the 55th Monte Carlo Rally after Frenchman Bruno Saby, leading at the start of the day, was forced to drop out when his Lancia’s transmission broke down.

Saby was forced to abandon the rally 200 meters into the second stage. Of the 160 autos starting in the rally, 128 remained.
