New York-based American Express Co. reported that 1986 preliminary consolidated net income from continuing operations reached a record high level of $1.11 billion, an increase of 37% over 1985’s $812 million. The company surpassed the billion-dollar threshold in net income for the first time, with “all four of our primary operating units setting record highs for earnings,” a spokesman said.
