About 9,500 Jews emigrated to Israel last year, an 11% decrease from 1985, the Central Bureau of Statistics said Thursday.

It said only 202 of the 914 Jews reported to have left the Soviet Union in 1986 came to Israel.

A 58% decrease was registered in immigration from Africa, apparently due to a drop in the number of Ethiopian Jews reaching Israel. Last year, 1,000 African Jews arrived in Israel compared to 2,300 in 1985.

Immigration from South Africa more than doubled, with 565 Jews coming to Israel compared to 246 in 1985.

About 2,000 American Jews emigrated to Israel, 100 more than the previous year.
