The World : 80% Join Salvador Strike
Salvadoran business groups reported more than 80% compliance with a one-day general strike against President Jose Napoleon Duarte’s economic policies. Most shops in downtown San Salvador were closed. Many factories, restaurants and even private schools shut their doors for the day. The National Assn. of Private Business, a conservative organization that led the strike call, said there was 90% compliance in the capital and 80% in major provincial towns. The strike’s main purpose was to protest Duarte’s imposition of higher taxes at the beginning of the year.
