Voters decided Thursday to keep this southwest Michigan village in existence, rejecting a proposal to merge with a nearby township.

“We’re still in business,” Clerk Lucille Betz said after 76% of those voting in the Kalamazoo County village turned down the proposal to merge with Climax Township.

Betz said 42 residents voted for the proposal and 133 against. Some residents had said merging the one-stoplight village with Climax Township would lower the cost of services. Others said the move would mean a loss of local control.
