Pakistan announced Monday that Foreign Secretary Abdul Sattar will visit India for talks on defusing tensions that have sparked military buildups on both sides of the India-Pakistani border.

A government spokesman said the decision came in response to an invitation from Indian officials who Sunday urged talks between a Pakistani envoy and Indian Foreign Secretary A.S. Gonsalves to end the border dispute.

Details of Sattar’s visit to New Delhi were being worked out “through diplomatic channels, the spokesman said. No date was set but the spokesman said the trip will begin soon.

In New Delhi, a Foreign Ministry official said, “A secretary-level delegation is welcome here at any time.”

The announcement by Pakistan was the latest indication that the crisis along the border was easing.
