East Shivers in Record Cold
Record cold gripped parts of the East for a second consecutive day today, sending the homeless flocking to shelters, while a gusty storm spewed rain on the Pacific Coast and more than a foot of snow in higher elevations of the West.
The temperature plummeted to a record 17 degrees below zero at Washington’s Dulles International Airport in Virginia, 8 below in Atlantic City, N.J., and 3 below in Baltimore. In the West, a new storm that moved inland off the Pacific Coast dumped up to 16 inches of snow by early today on the northern Sierra Nevada at Echo Summit, Nev. Twelve inches fell at Kingvale, Nev., and Truckee, Calif., and 10 inches at Meyers, Nev.
