Child Care and County’s Courts

Share

Bravo to Judge Linda Miller (View, Jan. 25) in taking on the added responsibility of seeking to work out some type of child care service at the increasingly busy Orange County courts. Frankly, I am amazed that it has taken this long for the California Judicial Council to act on this pressing, daily problem.

More people in court means longer waiting periods and inevitable delays in keeping to case appointment schedules. What is a parent to do on his or her court day when there is no extra money available to pay for baby-sitting or no person available? There is virtually no child care center in the county that would even consider taking in a child just for one day.

Going to court--guilty or not--is already a stressful situation. Having to concentrate on your small children while there only adds to the pressure.

The new state law which requires all courthouses built or renovated after 1987 to include child care centers is a long-awaited step in the right direction. Judge Miller’s actions to form a group of interested people to deal with the problem at existing courthouses is a tremendous boon to the crisis. My hat is off to you, Judge Miller.
