Three members of the four-man bobsled team aboard Canada III were injured when the sled crashed during the European Championships at Cervinia, Italy.

The sled was going 67 m.p.h. when it flipped on its side and slammed into the lip of the icy track before skidding to a halt. The three injured crewmen were taken to a hospital by helicopter.

Officials said pilot Chris Lori suffered a broken left collarbone and left hand, shoulder and rib injuries and cuts on the face. Brad Norris and Francois Payer were treated and released, while Jan Armstrong was not injured.

East Germany I, piloted by Wolfgang Hoppe, had the best combined time after two runs down the “Blue Lake” course in Italy’s Aosta Valley. The two final runs are scheduled for today.
