Former Trojan Tony Tonelli Dies

Amerigo (Tony) Tonelli, a guard on the USC football team in 1936-38, died Friday in Newport Beach after a long illness. He was 69.

Tonelli, who blocked a punt in USC’s 7-3 win over Duke in the 1939 Rose Bowl, later played with the Detroit Lions. He coached briefly and then joined the Air Force, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He lived in Huntington Beach.
