Will the real Mona Lisa please stand up? Last year a computer artist claimed the famed portrait was a self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci, but an Oakland doctor says now that the famous face is truly that of a woman--whose bemused smile may indicate a disorder associated with pregnancy. Dr. Kedar Adour, an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, said the world’s most famous half-smile may have been caused by Bell’s palsy, a type of facial paralysis that usually occurs suddenly and is characterized by a swollen nerve behind an ear.
