Karin Kania of East Germany won her sixth world sprint speedskating championship Sunday at Ste. Foy, Quebec, over Bonnie Blair of the United States.

Kania, who was in second place overall going into the 1,000 meters, clinched the title by recording the best women’s time of the meet of 1:22.24.

Blair, of Champaign, Ill., settled for the silver medal, and Christa Rothenburger of East Germany won the bronze.

In the men’s division, Akira Kuroiwa of Japan won the gold medal, overtaking Nick Thometz of the United States with a strong performance in the 1,000.
