The Saddleback Community College District has captured first place in the “Governor’s Cup Forensic” contest, a debating competition held annually for two- and four-year colleges and universities from four western states.

The 25 students, representing Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College, won the all-day competition Sunday in Sacramento by compiling the most points in a series of categories including persuasive speech and humorous speech, Irvine Valley College spokeswoman Susan Clark said Monday.

Other participating schools included Stanford University and UC Berkeley, Clark said.

Craig Grossman, an Irvine Valley professor, and Bob Borneman, a Saddleback College professor were co-captains.
