The USDA said crop values fell sharply in 1986.
The estimated value of U.S. crop production for the year plummeted 24% to $58 billion, an annual report by the Agriculture Department said. Farmers generally harvested good yields last year, but market prices were down for some key commodities. The estimate is reached by multiplying production and estimated average prices, and is not identical to cash actually paid to farmers.
