HERBIG ON THE PODIUM FOR OPENING BOWL CONCERTS

Gunther Herbig will lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic in opening-week concerts July 7 and 9 as the orchestra begins its 10-week, 40-concert season at Hollywood Bowl. Herbig, music director of the Detroit Symphony, will conduct two Beethoven programs, with Alfred Brendel as piano soloist.

Music director Andre Previn will be on the podium Aug. 18 and 20. Others scheduled to conduct the Philharmonic include Edo de Waart, Ivan Fischer, Lukas Foss, Lawrence Foster, Erich Kunzel, Daniel Lewis, David Alan Miller, Leonard Slatkin, Henry Mancini, John Williams, David Zinman and two Philharmonic debutants, Andrew Litton and Hugh Wolff.

Four visiting orchestras will appear at the Bowl: the Vienna Philharmonic, led by Leonard Bernstein (post-season, Sept. 14 and 15); the Montreal Symphony, with Charles Dutoit (Aug. 4-8, including the annual Tchaikovsky Spectacular); the Boston Pops, led by Williams (July 19), and the Pasadena Symphony, conducted by Jorge Mester (the annual preseason Fourth of July program).

Guest soloists include pianists Emanuel Ax, Jorge Bolet, Yefim Bronfman, Alicia de Larrocha, Peter Roesel and Krystian Zimerman; violinists Itzhak Perlman, Joseph Swensen and Joshua Bell; cellist Lynn Harrell, singers Christa Ludwig and Florence Quivar and harmonica player Larry Adler.

Also scheduled to appear at Cahuenga Pass are Cab Calloway, Johnny Mathis, Dudley Moore and Mel Torme.
