UCI’s Yates, Barham Lose Doubles Match

The nation’s No. 1 doubles team of Charles Beckman and Royce Deppe from the University of Texas defeated UC Irvine’s Darren Yates and Julian Barham, 7-6, 6-3, Saturday in a semifinal of the National Indoor Tennis Championships at Richmond, Va.

The loss ended Yates’ and Barham’s 15-match winning streak this season.

Beckman and Deppe are the defending tournament champions.

In women’s play:

UC Irvine 6, Santa Clara 3--The Anteaters, paced by three victories in doubles play, defeated the Broncos at Santa Clara.

After the teams split six singles matches, Stephanie Rohrer and Dina Trenwith defeated Shaun Considine and Catherine Beauregard, 6-3, 6-0; Kathy Rose and Uma Rao beat Jenny Speen and Kim Grace, 6-0, 6-3, and Carol Northrup and Debbie Strombeck defeated Paula Sanchez and Debbie Strombeck, 6-3, 6-1. Rhorer, Rose and Rao also won their singles matches.

UCI plays at Fresno State today at 11.
