Stanford University trustees, despite a fund-raising goal of $1.1 billion, approved a “far larger” than expected 6% tuition increase for the next school year that will hike the cost for undergraduates to $11,880. Stanford’s current tuition is $11,208 for undergraduates. “The necessary increase was far larger than we expected,” said James Rosse, Stanford’s acting president. “To come up with the 6% figure, we balanced very pressing needs against very pressing pain.” Room and board at Stanford will rise 5.4% next year, to $4,954, bringing the total annual cost for a student to $16,834. Rosse said that even if the fund-raising target of $1.1 billion is met, tuition will still have to be raised “ . . . but we hope it will take the pressure off tuition since a lot of the money will go to student aid.”
