Federal police seized a U.S.-registered boat and arrested three Americans accused of smuggling more than half a ton of marijuana valued at $5 million, the attorney general’s office said.

The three arrested, identified as Mark Williams, 36, Wolfgang Petrasko, 38, and Brett Peterson, 27, told police Tuesday they were sailing the boat, Free Flight, from Jamaica to Miami and decided to stop at the Gulf Coast resort of Cancun, 775 miles southeast of Mexico City, officials said.

A federal judge will decide in the next several days whether the three will be tried in Mexico or extradited to the United States, the attorney general’s office said.
