The State Department has decided to close seven missions--five of them in Western Europe--this year because of a budget squeeze, Administration officials said today.

Officials said the seven U.S. consulates to be closed are: Duesseldorf, West Germany; Goteborg, Sweden; Lyon, France; Maracaibo, Venezuela; Salzburg, Austria; Tangier, Morocco, and Turin, Italy.

Officials said the U.S. consulate in Genoa, Italy, was also on a “hit list” of missions to be closed but was given a reprieve because of the role it will play in the 500th anniversary celebrations of Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World.
