With Praise for a Caring Teacher

I would like to comment on Rita Pyrillis’ article, “Artful Tricks of Teaching Trade Stop Dropout,” (Southeast/Long Beach sections, Feb. 8). As a student myself, I have been aware of the growing number of student dropouts, but was not aware of the Adult Performance Level Corps. which offers many students a second chance to earn credits and receive a high school diploma.

Hats off to Ginie Mains who is a teacher at Somerset Continuation High School. Teachers like her should be recognized for their effort in heping students achieve their goals. There should be more teachers today like Mains who take time to try and understand students who have a difficult time with school. It sounds as if Mains knows what her students are going through and uses techniques to encourage students to be more interested in what they are doing in class. With some encouragement, maybe students can go out into the world with some knowledge and basic skills needed to survive.
