Nikolai Gulyaev of the Soviet Union led the overall standings after two events in the men’s World Speedskating Championships at Heerenveen, Netherlands.
Gulyaev won the 500 meters in a track record 37.24 seconds, and finished second in the 5,000 meters in 6:51.28.
Dutchman Leo Visser set a world record of 6:47.01 for 5,000 meters.
