Three Yakima Indians serving federal prison sentences for illegally netting more than 53 tons of fish in the Columbia River were placed in a tribal jail to await a tribal hearing on the charges. David Sohappy Sr., his son, David Sohappy Jr., and Matthew McConville were flown from a prison in Sandstone, Minn., to a jail on the Yakima Indian Reservation, Thomas Keefe Jr., their attorney, said in Seattle. The transfer followed months of negotiations between the tribe and the federal government over the Yakimas’ contention that an 1855 treaty guarantees the tribe sovereignty over its members’ activities.
