British Encouraged to Move to Falklands; Islanders Unhappy

Britain launched a plan Sunday to encourage more people to emigrate to the Falkland Islands, a move that already has angered some islanders because of a chronic housing shortage.

Under the plan, applicants will be given free one-way air fares to the remote South Atlantic islands, scene of a British victory over Argentine invaders in 1982. Volunteers will also receive assistance in selling their homes in Britain and refunds for the costs of shipping possessions. And, they will get priority on housing.

The housing shortage is partly due to the influx of workers brought here to build a huge new airport and barracks, as well as the presence of about 3,000 British troops.

The government in London is eager to increase the population of the Falklands (there are now 1,902 islanders in addition to the troops). Most live in the capital, Port Stanley, with a handful in settlements scattered throughout the island chain. Most make their living from sheep farming.
