Freed Soviet dissident David Goldfarb left a New York hospital, exactly four months after his arrival in America, and declared cautious hope that the Soviet Union is easing policies against dissent. He said it is too soon to tell whether the release of some political prisoners signals permanent change. Goldfarb, 68, who has been under treatment for lung cancer and diabetes ever since his arrival, walked through the hospital using a prosthetic left leg and a walker. His release from the Soviet Union reportedly had been delayed two years by his refusal to cooperate with a KGB attempt to frame U.S. journalist Nicholas Daniloff.
