A second nationwide strike within five days brought Greece to a standstill as more than 2 million workers protested a wage freeze imposed by the Socialist government of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou. Following up a strike involving a million workers last Thursday, the new 24-hour stoppage grounded all flights of the national Olympic Airways and closed down factories, offices and shops across the nation. Strikers are demanding immediate wage increases and a relaxation of the government’s 16-month-old austerity program.
