President Reagan said today he will travel across the country promoting his package of measures to make U.S. businesses more competitive and to restore confidence in the “Made in America” label.

Reagan said in a speech to business, education and science leaders that his goal is a “quest for excellence. Call it preparing for the 21st Century. In the year 2000, we want America still at the top of the charts, the front of the pack, the head of the class.”

“Yes, in the year 2000, we want America to be number one and climbing still for the stars,” he said.

The President said he will travel throughout the country in coming weeks to spark a “tent meeting” approach to the problems of the next century.

“This will be a great national discussion of our future, a kind of great national tent meeting, what they used to call a Chautauqua,” he said.

Since undergoing prostate surgery on Jan. 5, Reagan’s schedule has been limited. White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said today that Reagan’s recovery had been “superb” and that “he’s back on his normal schedule” after a six-week post operative schedule.

On Thursday, Reagan will send to Congress his legislative package, which calls for steps such as easing antitrust laws, changes in product-liability laws and steps to raise educational standards. He did not spell out his proposals in any detail.
