The European Broadcasting Union paid $5.7 million for the exclusive rights to transmit the 1988 Winter Olympics from Calgary, Alberta, to Western Europe, the International Olympic Committee said in Lausanne, Switzerland, Tuesday. The U.S. rights, announced several months ago, went to American Broadcasting Co. for $309 million. The Soviet Union and Eastern European countries are still negotiating broadcast rights to the Games. Japan has signed a contract, but the IOC declined to give the sum.
