The Region : A Renter Climbs the Wall

An angry tenant, upset over redevelopment plans for his Miracle Mile neighborhood, disrupted a city Planning Commission meeting when he climbed up a window in the hearing room. Rademas Pera’s ire was sparked after the commission turned down a proposal to place an 18-month moratorium on demolishing some apartments in the area. Pera, one of 40 members of the Detroit Street Coalition at the meeting, was asked to leave after shouting at commission President Dan Garcia. He refused and instead climbed about 15 feet up an iron window grill. The meeting was recessed for 10 minutes while a security guard talked Pera into leaving. He was not arrested. Marsha Mann, head of the coalition and Pera’s wife, said: “We’ve tried to be polite, but we’re getting shafted. He was trying to show that this whole issue has turned into a circus.” Homestead Group Associates has bought property just north of Wilshire Boulevard and plans to build luxury apartments.
