Gloxinias

The tubers of gloxinias are easy to grow, especially in the cooler regions of Southern California. They like lots of light but not the midday sun. To plant them--in pots or in the ground--barely cover them with soil. They will flower profusely if you use a mild, balanced fertilizer such as liquid fish.

Coriander, also known as cilantro, is an indispensable ingredient in many Mexican, Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai dishes. This strongly flavored herb resembles Italian parsley in appearance, having dark green, saw-toothed leaves. You can use the dried seeds of the coriander plant in breads and pastries. Extremely easy to grow, coriander favors cool weather and should be planted now through early spring.

Strawberry plants require an even supply of moisture for fruit production and should be watered weekly if rainfall is sporadic. Keep a lookout for snails and slugs, especially after heavy rain. Covering the area with a black plastic mulch, or with a mulch of straw or pine needles, will help keep the fruit clean and prevent rot.
