Bob Ormsby, atoning for an untimely mistake a year ago, beat runner-up Felix McGrath for the men’s slalom title in the final event of the U.S. Alpine Ski Championships at Copper Mountain, Colo.

Earlier, Tamara McKinney, the world’s best slalom skier, blistered the second-run course to overtake young Sally Knight and win the women’s slalom.

Ormsby, 23, of Tahoe City, Calif., led McGrath by a mere eight-hundredths of a second in the first run. He then nailed the second run with the fastest second-run time of 48.14 seconds, giving him a combined time of 1:37.77.

McGrath, who won the giant slalom Friday, finished in 1:37.96.

McKinney, 24, of Olympic Valley, Calif., claimed her fifth national slalom title with the best second run of 49.36 seconds for a combined time of 1 minute, 35.04 seconds.

She had trailed the Knight, by three-tenths of a second in the first run. Knight, an exuberant 17-year-old from Waitsfield, Vt., said: “I felt a lot of pressure, a lot of anxiety between runs It’s kind of hard to ski against your idol. Tamara is definitely the best.”
